Guide to answering your questions/tasks
This is the explanation from the GQA of what they expect as an answer to a written question.
Our current qualifications have assessment criteria that use the verbs list, state, describe and explain, but what does this mean in terms of the expected response? Below is an example of how the verb in front of the same assessment criteria indicates the type of answer expected.
List or state:
Assessment criteria:
List or state requires a number of relevant items which apply to the question. Further description is not required. This could simply be answered by “Windows, doors, conservatories and roofline”
Describe:
Assessment criteria:
This is where we would expect a relatively clear overview of something. This can be defined as “painting a picture with words” I would expect an overview of what rather than why or how.
A reasonable answer to the assessment criteria would be “We mainly fit PVCu, but some timber and the odd aluminium frame. We fit opening and fixed windows, different types of doors, and fit single, double or triple glazed units in frames of various colours, sizes and finishes”
Explain:
Assessment criteria:
With this we would expect the candidate to show a relatively detailed understanding of the content/process mentioned. This could include what it is, how it works, what it looks like, what it does, how it happens, why it happens, relevant reasons. The answer should go into greater detail than merely describing.
The above is intended as a guide and will help you ensure the type and depth of answer expected.
